Having the ability to hold a book in one’s hands, to turn a page, to ponder the contents, context and impact of an image or a story allows the mind to drill deep into recollections long forgotten, to bring forth the past into the present, to reignite excitement and passion.
Just over 40 years ago on December 31, 1978, an extraordinary event took place on the corner of Post and Steiner streets in San Francisco as thousands of Deadheads gathered with their favorite band to pay tribute and bid farewell to one of the most beloved music venues in the Bay Area, Bill Graham’s famed Winterland Arena.
The Closing of Winterland featured the Blues Brothers, the New Riders of the Purple Sage, the good ‘ole Grateful Dead and of course, the Deadheads.
